GEO & AEO · The search shift
Your buyers stopped searching. They're asking.
When someone asks ChatGPT which firm to use, you are either in the answer or you are invisible — and you cannot buy your way in. Being recommended is earned. That has been our job from the very beginning.
Why this, why now
The click is disappearing.
For twenty years, being found meant ranking on Google and buying reach on social platforms. That model is thinning. Industry analysis widely reports that the large majority of Google searches now end without anyone clicking through to a website, and Gartner's forecast of a sharp fall in traditional search volume by 2026 has broadly landed.
People increasingly get the answer without visiting anyone's site. Which means the question is no longer only where do we rank — it is are we in the answer at all, and is what it says about us right?
This is a reputation problem wearing a marketing costume. And it is the reason a communications firm, rather than a search agency, is the right sort of business to hand it to.
- Named — or not — when buyers ask for recommendations
- Described accurately, or from stale coverage
- Cited as a source, or invisible to the model
- Recommended alongside competitors, or instead of them
- Measurable, repeatable, evidenced on a date
The part most agencies won't tell you
You cannot buy your way into the answer.
OpenAI states plainly that advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT gives. ChatGPT Ads is a separate, marked placement running alongside the response — useful, measurable, and increasingly a real channel. But it does not purchase a mention inside the organic answer.
What earns that mention is what has always earned reputation: credible third-party coverage, consistent published facts, and being treated as a source worth trusting. Any firm implying they can buy you into an AI recommendation is selling something that does not exist — and that is the claim we would check first.
What the work actually is.
Five linked strands. The technical work makes you readable to a model; the earned work makes you worth citing. Neither succeeds alone.
AI visibility audit
We run the questions your buyers really ask across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, and record what comes back: whether you appear, how you are described, what is cited and who is recommended instead.
What the models say about you
Where an assistant repeats something outdated, inconsistent or simply wrong, we trace it to the underlying published source — because that is the thing that has to change, not the answer itself.
Structured data & machine readability
Schema, clean canonical facts, answer-shaped content, and the crawl and licensing signals that decide whether an AI system can read and reuse you at all.
Earned citation
The media relations half: coverage in the sources models already trust, expert commentary, and third-party validation. This is conventional PR, aimed at a new destination.
ChatGPT advertising
Planned and run as its own layer, with its own measurement — never conflated with organic answer presence. Newly live across Europe, and already running in the UK.
Re-testing & reporting
The same questions, re-run on a defined cycle, so movement is demonstrated rather than claimed — and so you can see when a model changes its mind about you.
Paid and earned, measured apart.
The most common mistake we see is crediting advertising for a change in what the assistants say organically. They are different mechanisms and they need different scorecards.
| Layer | What it is | Measured on |
|---|---|---|
| Organic AI answer | Whether the assistant names and recommends you unprompted | Mentions, wording, citations, recommendation frequency |
| ChatGPT advertising | Marked placement running alongside the answer | Impressions, engagement, conversions |
| Earned authority | Coverage and validation in sources models trust | Coverage quality, source authority, subsequent answer changes |
| Commercial result | What the business actually gets | Qualified enquiries, pipeline, revenue |
We hold one rule throughout: paid advertising does not buy influence over organic AI answers. Where the two move together, we say so and show why — we do not let a paid campaign take credit for earned ground.
Questions we're asked.
01 What is AI search optimisation, and how is it different from SEO?
SEO earns you a position in a list of links. AI search optimisation earns you a mention inside the answer itself — when someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews or Gemini a question, whether your organisation is named, how it is described, and whether it is recommended. The two overlap but are not the same discipline: search engines rank pages, answer engines synthesise sources. It is also called Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) or Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO).
02 Can we pay to appear in ChatGPT’s answers?
No. OpenAI states that advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT gives. ChatGPT Ads is a separate, clearly marked placement that runs alongside answers — it does not buy your way into the organic response. Being recommended inside an answer is earned, through the authority and consistency of what is published about you. Any agency implying otherwise is selling something that does not exist.
03 Why does a PR firm do this rather than an SEO agency?
Because of what answer engines actually draw on: credible third-party coverage, consistent published facts, and sources the model already treats as trustworthy. Earning those is media relations, which is our discipline and always has been. Technical foundations matter too, and we do that work — but the technical layer alone cannot make a model cite you if nothing authoritative says anything about you.
04 How do you know whether we are visible in AI answers at all?
We test it. We run the questions your buyers actually ask across the major assistants, record whether you are mentioned, what is said about you, which sources are cited and who is recommended instead. That produces a baseline you can hold — not an opinion about whether you "should" be visible, but a record of what the assistants said on a given date, repeatable later to show movement.
05 What if an AI describes our business inaccurately?
That is a reputation problem, and it is one of the more common reasons organisations come to us. Answers are assembled from what is published — so outdated coverage, inconsistent descriptions or an unanswered claim can be repeated back to buyers as fact. The work is correcting the underlying record: publishing clear, structured, consistent source material and earning authoritative coverage that supersedes the stale version.
06 Can you run ChatGPT advertising as well as the earned side?
Yes, and we treat them as separate layers with separate measurement, which matters more than it sounds. Paid placement is measured on impressions, engagement and conversions. Organic answer presence is measured on mentions, wording, citations and recommendation frequency. Keeping them apart prevents the most common mistake we see: crediting advertising for a change in what the assistants say organically.
07 How long does it take to see a change in AI answers?
Technical and structured-data fixes can be reflected within weeks. Changes driven by earned authority follow the media cycle and take longer — coverage has to exist and be indexed before a model can draw on it. We baseline at the start and re-test on a defined cycle, so progress is evidenced rather than asserted. Nobody can promise a specific position in an AI answer, and you should be wary of anyone who does.
08 Is this the same as your AI governance work?
No, they are two halves of the same question. AI Search & Discovery is about how your organisation appears in other people’s AI systems. AI Human Proof, our governance and assurance framework, is about whether the AI you deploy yourself is transparent, accountable and under meaningful human control. Clients frequently need both, and they are scoped separately.
